I think it's just industry standard now to make the stories in this type of game pretty bland. It's not bad, it's just not particularly compelling. The story of Torchlight 2, like so many other dungeon crawlers, is entirely forgettable. Veteran is very manageable, and I play on Veteran now instead of Normal, but the change in difficulty, which I made toward the end of Act II, was striking.

Then a second, middle-step between Normal and Veteran might improve balance.Īctually, the concept behind the upcoming sliding scale difficulty patch for Diablo III would work nicely here, since switching from one level to the next is a bit jarring at the moment in Torchlight 2. I think Normal should actually be harder than it is, since it's really far too easy. You go from never dying in Normal, to dying all the time in Veteran. The difficulty gap between Normal and Veteran is a little off-kilter. I wish Torchlight 2 had done more to break that trend. I like the interesting loot, but almost every ARPG out there insists on giving me lots of junk.

I ended up sticking with the first batch of Unique weapons I found for the full Second Act, and that actually worked out quite well.īut it does make me wonder what the point of this constant stream of uninteresting loot is. This could be copy and pasted from my Borderlands 2 review, quite honestly, and that's probably because I'm just not that into constantly cycling in loot. It's a bit overwhelming at times, and there are moments where I just wish there was less of it and that the loot you did find had a bit more impact. The loot is great, but I do have quibbles.

Torchlight 2 has a better user interface than Diablo III when it comes to finding servers to play on with friends.īut from what I've played so far, there's less teamwork and collaboration in Torchlight II, possibly due to the less linear structure of the game, and possibly due to the fact that I've been playing pre-release. I was happier once my character was well-armored - and helmeted. I realize this is entirely a personal taste issue, and some people probably love the toon look. I love that you can customize each class, and that you can pick and choose whether each character is male or female.īut a part of me wishes the characters weren't quite so cartoony. This is one area where Diablo III beats Torchlight II hands-down. The electric guitars don't work for me, and the score fails to ever really draw me in the ways some other recent titles have. I'm not a big fan of the music in Torchlight 2.
